It is a Cold or Winter Allergies?

Winter is here, the furnace is on, and you've got the sniffles. 'Tis the season for yet another common cold. But, what if that stuffy nose is due to winter allergies? Is it possible to tell the difference?

The onset of winter weather does not necessarily mean an end to misery for allergy sufferers. In fact, it may mean more symptoms because as we close windows against the frigid weather, we trap allergens indoors.

The good news is that it is possible to differentiate between colds and winter allergies. Colds and flu typically last for no more than 10 days and may be accompanied by fever, aches, and pains & symptoms that are not generally associated with allergies. So, if your sniffles last longer than a week or two, make an appointment with an allergist.

Stop Sniffles Before They Start
To reduce allergens the whole winter season, use a HEPA furnace filter or air cleaner to filter dust mites and other allergens from indoor air. If you haven't already done so recently, have your furnace ducts cleaned & they can harbor mold and dust. Wash bedding once a week, and use allergy-proof covers. Eliminate mold by using a dehumidifier in damp areas, and clean showers and sinks with a 5% bleach/detergent solution. If you have pets, and dander, saliva, and pet hair are a problem, keep your furry friends out of the bedroom and bathe them often. Antihistamines, decongestants, and steroid nasal sprays may help eliminate bothersome allergy symptoms.
